Art.Fair 24 October 2014 – 27 October 2014
This October Anise Gallery will be joining 100 other international art galleries to exhibit at Art.Fair in Cologne. The fair for Modern and Contemporary Art is now in its 12th edition and each year unites established artists new young talent alongside an exclusive programme of events including the much anticipated BLOOOM Awards. As the fair attracts increasing numbers of visitors each year, 36,000 were recorded last year, it has a new venue for 2014 in Koelnmesse – one of the five largest convention centres in the world.
We will be exhibiting works from Kyle Henderson, Sachiyo Nishimura and Minho Kwon – 3 artists that have been associated with the gallery from its beginnings and who, we feel, capture the true essence of Anise Gallery’s ethos within their work. Linked in their use of clean monochromatic architectural lines, Henderson, Nishimura and Kwon have derived inspiration from the built environment. Individually, they revert to their own methods and techniques to produce exquisite architectural art.
Henderson is a welcome new talent within the London Illustration scene. His previous training as an architect is undeniably evident in his work as it is the symmetrical lines and angles found in buildings that inspires him. Naturally drawn to imagery that is dark, dense and complex it is the cities and their architecture that offer this palette in abundance. Meticulous repetitions of shape and form often challenge the perception of the human eye as cityscapes metamorphose into abstract insects.
Nishimura is drawn to the visual language of industrialisation; by pushing the boundaries of photography, she conveys the fascinating anonymity of certain urban spaces and objects of which we have become oblivious. Through her meticulous post production process, involving endless grid schematics and geometrical sketches, she proposes another version on the cityscape that is more beautiful, complex and thought provoking that what actually exists.
Minho Kwon’s spectacularly detailed drawings are a result of a combination of factors; the regimented structure that surrounded him whilst growing up in Seoul; his exposure to architecture at an early age and his interest in the economic history of Korea. The result is all encompassing; intricate drawings filled with political debate, questions of modernism and, most fundamentally, an in depth analysis of Korean culture. Since moving back to Korea last year, the core influences on his work have clearly strengthened. His exquisite imagination brings the history and people of everyday buildings to life. Entire stories are recollected as the organic meets the mechanic and the nuts and bolts of our existence are literally revealed.
