Anise Award

Anise Award Logo

After working with many artists over the years, we have repeatedly heard how difficult it can be to secure decent studio space at an affordable price in London. In a bid to help students who are in such a critical stage of their early careers, we have launched the Anise Award which provides a workspace and a mentorship scheme through a residency program. The winner also has the opportunity for an exhibition post-residency to showcase their new work. 2023’s winner was artist printmaker Katie Oplaender, who will begin her residency with us from March 25th until mid June.

The residency boasts an impressive 50sqm furnished work space with natural lighting and wooden floorboards. Separate to the workspace, the space also includes an en-suite bathroom, shower and lounge area with armchairs and bookshelves. There is a communal office kitchen, dining area and three bathrooms on the ground floor which the student will share with the AVR team. The space is situated a few minutes walk from Greenwich train station, a 10 minute walk from central Greenwich and located down a quiet mews.

The residency provides:

  • 1:1 crit session with printmaker and etcher Ian Chamberlain (a relevant artist is selected to mentor each residency artist)
  • Professional photography incl headshots and shots of work individually and in situ
  • Free 50sqm studio space in the heart of Greenwich
  • Free access to equipment such as a studio darkroom, screenprinter and materials
  • Social media and newsletter promotion and a photo series throughout to document residency
  • Mentoring and guidance provided from gallery and artist professionals to aid the development of the artist’s practice
  • 1:1 self-marketing toolkit to help promote artist’s social media presence
  • General amenities such as tea, coffee, fruit, biscuits daily as well as breakfasts on Mondays + cocktails on Fridays
  • continued support and collaboration post-residency

This fantastic opportunity is open to all selected summer show artists to apply for. We hope to support all of our artists during these formative years of their careers and want to stress the importance of providing space to artists at a time when studio space is becoming increasingly unattainable in London. The Anise Award will run for the second year this autumn, and is open to all of our exhibiting graduate students to apply for.
