With a keen interest in virtual reality and its technologies we feel, as a gallery, that it is important to keep up to date with developments in its use. With this in mind we visited our close friends and collaborators A-VR at their pop-up space in The Artworks, Elephant and Castle. The space was set up to showcase exciting uses for the technology, in the form of a room scale virtual environment hotel suite with the new [HTC Vive] wireless device, which makes navigating the physical space of the pop-up much easier.
The visuals themselves are from a development very close to completion by Stow Projects, a creative property development and urban regeneration company. Opening at the end of the year, it will be London’s first-ever shipping container apart-hotel, and the modular functionality and aesthetics of the new hotel was preceded by a-VR’s space in The Artworks, which brings small businesses to the heart of Elephant and Castle’s busy hub.
Donning the wireless headset, the viewer is free to wander around the virtual hotel room (just resist the urge to lay on the bed), taking a moment to check out the cityscape from the large windows and get a (literal) feel for the exact size of everything from the shower to the fluffy bunny, which is possible with 1:1 scale.
Check out some photos from inside and outside the headset. Although the experience is now over you can still check out their work at www.a-vr.co.uk and follow them for further info on vr pop-ups!
